Sant Sadurni D'Anoia 2003-2004

The Mayor of Sant Sadurni d'Anoia near Barcelona invited us, along with our postgraduate students at Manchester School of Architecture, to look at his town which has 10,000 inhabitants and produces "200,000,000 ampolles de Cava". The town was founded upon the process of making Cava and the existing buildings reflected this historic dependence. It was changing due to its proximity to Barcelona, the employment of local people in the car industry (rather than in producing wine) and the disparity in land values that makes it more attractive to develop property than grow vines. The Mayor and townspeople were concerned by the changes overtaking them.

We visited the town and examined ways in which the identity and character of the town could be developed through detailed proposals for buildings and public space, particularly the historic building Can Guineu.

Our collaborator Manel Bermudo Pla, a Catalan architect, organised the interactions with the town council, presentations by local architects, and the final exhibition of student proposals for Can Guineu in the courtyard of the building.
